A RESOLUTION
To urge the National Park Service in the United States Department of the Interior to include the Fort Ancient Earthworks, the Newark Earthworks, the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, SunWatch Indian Village and Archaeological Park, and Serpent Mound on the United States World Heritage Tentative List to be submitted to the United Nations for inclusion on the World Heritage List.


BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF OHIO:

       WHEREAS, The Fort Ancient Earthworks in Warren County, the Newark Earthworks in Licking County, the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park in Ross County, SunWatch Indian Village and Archaeological Park in Montgomery County, and Serpent Mound in Adams County are all outstanding examples of internationally significant and nationally recognized archaeological sites in Ohio; and

       WHEREAS, The investigations of those sites were important foundations for scientific archaeology in North America. In addition, the sites were some of the first archaeological sites to be preserved in the United States; and

       WHEREAS, The National Park Service in the United States Department of the Interior is compiling a list of natural and cultural heritage properties from which it will select nominees for submission to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization for listing on the World Heritage List, a list of the world's cultural and natural heritage sites; and

       WHEREAS, The Fort Ancient Earthworks, the Newark Earthworks, and the sites that comprise the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park are being submitted to the National Park Service by the Ohio Historical Society and the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park as a group for a serial nomination of earthworks constructed by the Hopewell culture. In addition, those groups are joining with the SunWatch Indian Village and Archaeological Park in submitting that site and Serpent Mound to the Service as a separate group; now therefore be it

       RESOLVED, That we, the members of the Senate of the 130th General Assembly of the State of Ohio, urge the National Park Service in the United States Department of the Interior to include the Fort Ancient Earthworks, the Newark Earthworks, the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, SunWatch Indian Village and Archaeological Park, and Serpent Mound on the United States World Heritage Tentative List to be submitted to the United Nations for inclusion on the World Heritage List; and be it further

       RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the Senate send duly authenticated copies of this resolution to the Ohio Historical Society, the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, SunWatch Indian Village and Archaeological Park, the National Park Service, and the news media of Ohio.
