A RESOLUTION | In memory of Jonathan Winters. |
| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the 130th General Assembly of Ohio were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Jonathan Winters and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends; and |
| WHEREAS, Jonathan Winters left an indelible impression on the people whose lives he touched, and he will be remembered as a spirited individual who contributed immeasurably to the world around him. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and a native of Ohio, where he got his start in entertainment as a radio disc jockey and a television host, he was a pioneer of improvisational standup comedy, a new category that he was instrumental in developing, and he became the inspiration for the likes of Robin Williams, Jim Carrey, Johnny Carson, Lily Tomlin, Tracey Ullman, and Billy Crystal, who followed in his footsteps. In addition, he made history in 1956 when his program, The Jonathan Winters Show, was the first to use color videotape, and he will be remembered for his generosity, talents, and seemingly inexhaustible energy; and |
| WHEREAS, Jonathan Winters's regard for improving the quality of life in our society was clearly evident in his personal sacrifices of time and effort to his family, friends, and community, including his wife, the late Eileen, and his two children, Lucinda and Jay. A cast member of such productions as Mork and Mindy, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, The Little Prince, and The Smurfs 2, he was the recipient of an Emmy Award, two Grammy awards, and the Mark Twain Prize for Humor from the Kennedy Center, and he gave generously of his energy and abilities in all of his endeavors. Without a doubt, he displayed exceptional concern and insight, and his absence will be keenly felt; and |
| WHEREAS, In his various roles as a family man, comedian, painter, and author of such works as a collection of short stories entitled, "Winters' Tales," Jonathan Winters always used his talents to the benefit of those around him, and the warmth and understanding he readily extended to those around him will stand as a testament to his personal character. Although the void his death has created can never be filled, the legacy of care and commitment he established will surely live on. The world is a richer place for his having been in it, and he will be truly missed; therefore be it |
| RESOLVED, That we, the members of the Senate of the 130th General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, express a profound sense of loss and sincere regret at the death of Jonathan Winters and, in so doing, pay tribute to the memory of a truly unique individual; and be it further |
| RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit a duly authenticated copy of this Resolution to the family of Jonathan Winters. |
